Expert Advice from Michael D’Netto, M.D.

If you’re struggling with persistent allergy symptoms despite medications or avoidance strategies, allergy shots—also known as subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT)—may be a game-changing option. But are they right for you?

“Allergy shots are the only treatment that can actually retrain the immune system to stop overreacting to allergens,” says Michael D’Netto, M.D., a Mayo Clinic Health System board-certified Allergist and Immunologist at WinnMed in Decorah. “Unlike medications, they don’t just mask symptoms—they address the root cause.”

Pros of Allergy Shots

  • Long-Term Relief: Allergy shots can reduce or eliminate symptoms for years, even after treatment ends.
  • Fewer Medications: Many patients are able to reduce or stop allergy medications over time.
  • Prevention of New Allergies: Immunotherapy may prevent the development of new allergies and reduce the risk of asthma, particularly in children.
  • Customized Treatment: Shots are tailored to your specific allergens, based on allergy testing.

Cons of Allergy Shots

  • Time Commitment: Treatment typically lasts 3 to 5 years, with weekly injections during the build-up phase and monthly injections during the maintenance phase.
  • Possible Reactions: Mild side effects include redness or swelling at the injection site. Rarely, more serious reactions like anaphylaxis can occur, which is why patients are monitored for 30 minutes after each shot.
  • Not for Food Allergies: Allergy shots are effective for environmental allergens and insect stings, but not for food allergies.

Is It Right for You?

“If your allergies are affecting your quality of life, and medications aren’t enough, allergy shots may be the best long-term solution,” Dr. D’Netto explains. “We’ll work together to determine if you’re a good candidate.”
