Construction on the WinnMed campus in Decorah has concluded following the completion of the multi-year Transforming Tomorrow growth and expansion project.

Planning for Transforming Tomorrow began in 2017 with progress paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent recovery. In 2023, the Board of Trustees approved the $50 million project, which included the renovation of the obstetrical unit, renovation and expansion of the clinic, and expansion and modernization of the surgical unit. The purchase of a da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System complimented the project by advancing technological capabilities alongside the new and improved spaces. Funds for Transforming Tomorrow were obtained through community investment, USDA low-interest loans, grants, financing through local banks and through WinnMed cash reserves.

At the June 2026 Board of Trustees meeting, WinnMed Foundation announced the total community contributions to date supporting Transforming Tomorrow. Ben Krouse-Gagne, WinnMed Foundation Director, reported that through Annual Fund campaigns from 2023 – 2026, room naming commitments, and portions of estate gifts dedicated to WinnMed, the community contributed $2,463,599.39 from more than 300 individuals, families and businesses to support Transforming Tomorrow renovation and expansion.

“Support for the Transforming Tomorrow project demonstrates how deeply our community believes in the future of care in our region and the trust they place in WinnMed. We are humbled by the benefactors who are helping make this transformation possible,” said Krouse-Gagne.

Community contributions will directly reimburse WinnMed for project-related expenses. These funds will also help reduce high-interest debt, positioning the hospital for a more sustainable financial future.

Steve Slessor, chief administrative officer, said “We are grateful to the many community members who stepped forward to support the transformation of WinnMed. We extend special appreciation to all who contributed to name a space within the expansion and renovation.”
